NFL wide receiver Kadarius Toney found himself in legal trouble last week after being arrested in Georgia on serious allegations. According to online records, Toney was booked into a Douglas County facility on February 6. He is facing two charges: aggravated assault by strangulation and obstructing or harassing 911 calls. A judge set bail at $25,000 for each charge. Records indicate that Toney was no longer in custody as of February 7.
The incident reportedly occurred on January 14. Toney allegedly assaulted a woman by placing his hand around her throat. He applied enough pressure to restrict her breathing. TMZ Sports, citing police documents, reported that the woman exhibited red marks on her neck. She also had petechial hemorrhaging in her eyes. These conditions are often caused by suffocation or strangulation. Additionally, Toney is accused of taking the woman’s phone to prevent her from calling for help.
Toney, 26, has had a tumultuous career in the NFL. He was a first-round draft pick by the New York Giants in 2021. He was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs midway through the 2022 season. While he showed flashes of potential. This included a pivotal punt return in Super Bowl LVII that helped secure a 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. However, his time with the Chiefs has been marked by inconsistency and missed opportunities.
Last season, Toney appeared in just three games for the Cleveland Browns before being released in December. His departure followed a costly taunting penalty. He also had a muffed punt in a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. These errors contributed to the Browns’ loss. The Chiefs had high hopes for Toney, envisioning him as their top wide receiver for the 2023 season. However, his performance fell short of expectations. He was notably inactive for all four playoff games. Meanwhile, Kansas City went on to win their second consecutive Super Bowl title.
Toney’s arrest adds another layer of complexity to his already uncertain future in the NFL. While he has demonstrated talent on the field, his off-field issues and legal troubles could jeopardize his career. The allegations against him are severe, and if proven true, they could have significant consequences both personally and professionally.
