Hamburg Public Sector Workers Strike for Higher Wages

A large-scale strike is shaking Hamburg today as public sector workers walk off the job, demanding better pay. The strike, led by the union ver.di, comes amid an ongoing wage dispute and is impacting multiple sectors across the city.

Airport Staff Join the Protest

The strike commenced with the night shift at Hamburg Airport, disrupting operations in key areas like aircraft handling. Despite the protest, flight schedules remained largely unaffected, with only minor delays reported. “A handful of employees from various departments are participating.” However, airport operations continue with occasional waiting times,” stated an airport spokesperson.

Thousands Gather for Demonstrations

Beyond the airport, the strike extends to hospitals, daycare centers, sanitation services, and cultural institutions. Employees from the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) are participating. Staff from Asklepios Clinics are involved as well. Workers from Elbkinder daycare centers and the disability assistance organization are also joining. Braving the cold and snow, over 1,000 workers took to the streets in the city center to voice their demands. Ver.di representative Ole Borgard noted that thousands more across Hamburg had joined the protest.

Daycare Centers and Public Services Hit Hard

Many parents faced childcare challenges as numerous Elbkinder daycare centers remained closed due to the strike. “We hope parents will understand and support our cause,” Borgard stated. The Elbkinder website had previously warned of potential closures, urging families to make alternative childcare arrangements. Hospitals also had to scale back operations, with surgical departments running on emergency staffing.

Cultural Events Affected

The strike has also disrupted cultural events, including performances at the Hamburg State Opera. Instead of the planned opera “Ariadne auf Naxos,” a concert version will be performed in the evening. Ticket holders can still attend or exchange their tickets for a later date.

Extended Strike for City Sanitation Workers

One of the most prolonged impacts will be felt in the sanitation sector, where workers are staging a four-day strike. Garbage collection and street cleaning will be halted until Sunday, except for essential winter services. Nine of Hamburg’s recycling centers are also closed, though emergency staff will maintain limited services at three locations.

The Core Demand: Better Pay

The strike centers around a demand for an 8% wage increase. Workers are also asking for at least an additional €350 per month. With the next round of negotiations approaching, United Services Trade Union is escalating pressure on employers to meet workers’ expectations. The outcome of these talks will directly impact approximately 50,000 employees across municipal and federal public service roles in Hamburg.

As negotiations unfold, Hamburg’s public sector workers continue their fight for fair wages. They ensure their voices are heard loud and clear.
