In the weeks leading up to the NBA trade deadline, the Golden State Warriors explored the possibility of reuniting with Kevin Durant, sparking rumors of a potential blockbuster move. Stephen Curry, the face of the Warriors franchise, reached out to Durant directly to discuss the idea of teaming up once again. However, Durant made it clear that a return to Golden State didn’t align with where he saw his career heading at this stage. According to sources close to ESPN, Durant expressed that the timing “just didn’t feel right” and that he wasn’t ready to revisit that chapter of his career.
Reflecting on their conversation, Curry emphasized the importance of mutual commitment and respect. “At the end of the day, you need everyone to be fully invested, no matter what history you share,” Curry told ESPN. “I have nothing but respect for KD. It’s all about finding peace of mind and being happy where you are. Neither of us had control over the situation, but I wanted to make sure he was making the decision that felt right for him. I’d never try to convince someone to be somewhere they don’t want to be.”
Curry made it clear that there’s no lingering tension between the two superstars. “No hard feelings, no resentment—none of that,” he said. “I understand his perspective completely.”
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr also weighed in on Durant’s decision, acknowledging the unique challenges Durant faced during his first stint with the team. “I don’t blame Kevin at all for not wanting to revisit that chapter,” Kerr told ESPN. “When he first joined us in 2016, he faced so much criticism—people accused him of jumping on the bandwagon. And even after he proved himself by winning back-to-back Finals MVPs, the noise never really stopped. Why would he want to put himself through that again?”
The Warriors reportedly had a framework in place with the Phoenix Suns to acquire Durant, but the deal hinged on Durant’s approval. When Durant declined, Golden State shifted its focus and ultimately struck a deal with the Miami Heat to bring in Jimmy Butler instead.
Curry’s mature and understanding approach to the situation highlights the mutual respect between the two NBA legends. While fans may have dreamed of seeing the duo reunite on the court, Curry’s comments remind us that personal fulfillment and happiness often outweigh the allure of nostalgia. Durant’s decision to stay true to his path, and Curry’s unwavering support, speaks volumes about the bond they share—both as competitors and as friends.
As the Warriors move forward with their revamped roster, one thing is clear: the legacy of Curry and Durant’s time together remains untarnished, and their respect for one another continues to set an example for the league.
