JacksonDespite securing a spot in the Champions League Round of 16, Bayern Munich continues to raise more questions than answers. Their latest performance against Celtic Glasgow was anything but convincing, leaving fans and critics alike wondering: Just how strong is this Bayern side?
It took a dramatic last-gasp effort from Alphonso Davies to salvage a 1-1 draw, barely pushing the ball over the line in stoppage time. This, coupled with their narrow 2-1 victory in the first leg, was enough to see them through. On paper, Bayern’s qualification was expected. In reality, it exposed cracks that have been forming for weeks.
Internally, discussions are likely heating up. Bayern’s recent performances have been a far cry from the dominant force they are known to be. The goalless draw against Bayer Leverkusen over the weekend was uninspiring, and their shaky display against Celtic did little to boost confidence.
Doubts over Vincent Kompany’s leadership, once whispered, are now growing louder. The Belgian coach arrived with a bold vision, implementing a high-energy attacking approach at the start of the season. Initially, it brought excitement. But as the campaign progressed, defensive fragility became glaringly obvious. While some improvements have been made in the Bundesliga—where Bayern sits ahead of reigning champions Leverkusen—issues persist on the bigger stage.
Bayern’s Champions League journey has been anything but smooth. Costly defeats to Aston Villa, Barcelona, and Feyenoord forced them into a tense playoff round rather than securing direct qualification. And while they ultimately overcame Celtic, the manner of their progression does little to inspire belief ahead of tougher battles.
With the knockout rounds looming, Bayern faces the prospect of clashing with heavyweights like Atlético Madrid or Leverkusen. Given their current form, these matchups could prove daunting. Let’s not forget, Bayern has already been eliminated from the DFB-Pokal by Leverkusen, a painful reminder that they are no longer invincible in domestic competitions either.
Kompany recently referred to this stage of the season as the “pressure days”—a period where everything is on the line, and performances must reach their peak. Unfortunately for Bayern, they seem to be drifting in the opposite direction.
