Pop star Katy Perry is under fire after launching a $6 million lawsuit against an 85-year-old disabled veteran, Carl Westcott, in an ongoing legal battle over a California mansion. The case has sparked outrage, with Westcott’s family condemning the singer’s actions as “unforgivable” and accusing her of exploiting a vulnerable individual.
Perry and her fiancé, actor Orlando Bloom, secured ownership of the $14.2 million Montecito estate in late 2023, following a lengthy court battle. However, the dispute traces back to 2020 when Westcott, who suffers from Huntington’s disease, agreed to sell the home. His family later argued that his declining health had impaired his decision-making at the time, making the sale invalid.
Despite winning the property rights, Perry has now escalated the conflict by suing Westcott for $6 million in alleged damages and unpaid rent—an action his family claims is driven by greed rather than necessity.
“The worse my father’s condition gets, the harsher they’ve been in trial,” Westcott’s son, Chart, stated. “It’s disheartening to see how the Hollywood elite treat ordinary people.”
The case has reignited discussions about the power imbalance between celebrities and everyday citizens, with critics slamming Perry for pursuing legal action against a frail, bedridden veteran. Although she and Bloom officially took possession of the mansion in March 2024, the legal drama is far from over. Perry is set to testify in the damages phase of the trial, which will determine the final outcome of the high-profile dispute.
