Germany Votes for a New Government

Today, millions of Germans head to the polls to decide the composition of the new Bundestag, shaping the country’s political direction for the next four years. More than 59 million eligible voters can cast their ballots between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Despite changes to the electoral law, the voting process remains the same for citizens. Each voter has two votes: the first for a direct candidate in their constituency and the second for a political party.

Current Polls Indicate Tight Race

According to the latest surveys, the CDU/CSU, led by chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz, is projected to be the strongest political force, polling between 28 and 32 percent. The far-right AfD follows with 20 to 21 percent, while the SPD lags behind with 14 to 16 percent. The Greens are polling at 12 to 14 percent, while the Left Party could reach up to 8 percent. The FDP (4 to 5 percent) and the newly formed Sahra Wagenknecht coalition (3 to 5 percent) are at risk of failing to secure seats in the Bundestag.

Difficult Government Formation Expected

With these numbers, coalition negotiations could be complex, making it difficult to form a stable government. The coming hours and days will determine how the political landscape unfolds.

Stay tuned as we bring you the latest updates on the federal election, including exit polls, early results, and reactions from political leaders.
