The Alternative for Germany (AfD) has doubled its result in the 2025 federal election, securing a significant political victory. The party leaders have reported receiving congratulations from notable figures, including billionaire Elon Musk and former Bayern Munich players.
Missed Call from Elon Musk
AfD leader Alice Weidel revealed during a press conference in Berlin that she had missed a call from Elon Musk, who attempted to congratulate her personally after the election. “This morning, when I turned on my phone or looked at it, I received missed calls from the USA during the night, including from Elon Musk, who congratulated me personally,” Weidel stated.
She further announced her intention to return an important call later that day but declined to reveal the identity of the recipient, citing confidentiality. Weidel emphasized that the party is in discussions with various political entities, including the Trump administration in Washington. Musk, who has been advising US President Donald Trump, had publicly expressed support for the AfD during the election campaign.
Congratulatory Messages from Former Bayern Players
Co-party leader Tino Chrupalla added that he had also received congratulations from two former FC Bayern Munich players who were once part of the national team. “So many greetings to Uli Hoeneß,” Chrupalla remarked, referencing the honorary president of FC Bayern.
When pressed for names, Chrupalla declined to disclose them, only confirming their past affiliations with the national team. His mention of Hoeneß appeared to be a direct response to the football executive’s critical remarks about the AfD. At a memorial service for Franz Beckenbauer in January 2024, Hoeneß had expressed his desire to see a return of the World Cup spirit in Germany but stated firmly, “I don’t want the AfD there.”
The AfD’s electoral success and the high-profile endorsements it has received suggest a shifting political landscape in Germany. However, the party’s rise continues to provoke both support and criticism within the country.
