In a landmark ruling, a court in Sarajevo has sentenced Bosnian Serb President Milorad Dodik to one year in prison and banned him from politics for six years due to his separatist actions. The verdict follows a yearlong trial in which Dodik was accused of disobeying the top international envoy overseeing peace in Bosnia.

Dodik, a pro-Russian leader, did not attend the sentencing and has vowed to disregard the ruling, even threatening radical measures, including the potential secession of Republika Srpska from Bosnia. His separatist stance has raised concerns of renewed tensions in the country, which still grapples with the scars of the 1992-95 war that resulted in 100,000 deaths and millions displaced.

The ruling is seen as a crucial moment in Bosnia’s efforts to maintain peace and stability under the U.S.-brokered Dayton Accords, which ended the war nearly three decades ago. However, Dodik’s defiance signals uncertainty ahead for the region’s fragile political landscape.
