Bielefeld, NRW – A major police operation unfolded in Bielefeld on Wednesday (February 26) after gunfire erupted at the Bielefeld Regional Court. Reports indicate that multiple people sustained injuries, and the police have arrested the first suspects in connection with the incident.
Gunfire at the Regional Court
According to various media sources, shots were fired at the courthouse during the trial of professional boxer Besar Nimani. The accused in the trial is 38-year-old Hüseyin A., who was apprehended in Brussels in July 2024. Authorities are also searching for another suspect who remains at large.
Law enforcement arrived promptly at the scene, deploying heavily armed officers in response to the attack. Initial reports suggest that four individuals were injured, though their conditions remain unclear.
Police Respond with Large-Scale Operation
The Bielefeld police issued a statement on Twitter at approximately 2:15 p.m., urging the public to avoid the area around Niederwall, where the courthouse is located. Witnesses reported that shots rang out on Kreuzstrasse at around 1:40 p.m.
Although the identities of the victims have not been officially confirmed, some reports suggest that they may be relatives of the accused. Police sources cited by dpa indicate that the attack was likely a targeted act against individuals connected to the trial.
Suspects Apprehended, Investigation Ongoing
Authorities have launched a full-scale investigation into the shooting. By early evening, police had blocked roads, halted tram services, and cordoned off side streets surrounding the crime scene.
At approximately 7:30 p.m., law enforcement provided an update confirming the arrest of two suspects and the seizure of a weapon. However, their exact roles in the attack remain under investigation. Officials believe that another individual linked to the crime may still be in the area.
