The Free Democratic Party (FDP) faces a familiar challenge after once again failing to surpass the five percent threshold in the federal elections. As was the case twelve years ago, the rebuilding process is now in the hands of the state associations, with hopes of a coordinated effort. Under Christian Lindner’s leadership—once seen as the party’s savior—the FDP experienced its biggest setback yet, securing only 4.3 percent of the vote.
State associations in North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Baden-Württemberg are taking the lead in the “Return to Berlin” project. Henning Höne, FDP leader in North Rhine-Westphalia, stresses the responsibility of these major associations and remains hopeful about the party’s future. However, unlike in 2013, the FDP lacks a dominant figure like Lindner. While names such as Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann and Wolfgang Kubicki have been suggested, many in the party believe a team-based leadership approach is the best way forward.
In Rhineland-Palatinate, the party must reorganize following the resignation of Volker Wissing and the sudden passing of Justice Minister Herbert Mertin. Economics Minister Daniela Schmitt and Bundestag MP Carina Konrad are temporarily leading the regional association. Schmitt supports a team-based leadership at the federal level but insists that a clear leader must emerge in the end.
Baden-Württemberg’s FDP is relying on its strong grassroots presence, with Hans-Ulrich Rülke leading the party into the next state elections. Deputy state chairman Pascal Kober calls for a leadership model that represents all wings of the party. Meanwhile, FDP General Secretary Judith Skudelny emphasizes the need for a more positive and pro-business message after the election setback. She believes the party is better positioned now than in 2013, with a clearer identity and stable finances.
The FDP in North Rhine-Westphalia also sees itself in a stronger position than after its previous Bundestag exit. Höne highlights upcoming state elections, starting with Hamburg, as key steps in the party’s effort to return to the federal stage.
