While fasting is a spiritual practice, maintaining good health during Ramadan is essential. Manal Elfakhani, a nutrition expert at Pennsylvania State University, emphasizes the importance of proper nutrition and hydration.
“Fasting is safe for most people, but planning ahead and making smart food choices at suhoor and iftar can help sustain energy and make the experience more meaningful,” she advises. Eating nutrient-rich foods, drinking plenty of water before dawn, and avoiding excessive sugary or fried foods can support well-being throughout the month.
Certain individuals are exempt from fasting, including young children, the elderly, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and those with medical conditions such as diabetes or heart disease. Elfakhani recommends that anyone with health concerns consult a doctor before deciding to fast.
As Ramadan begins, Muslims worldwide prepare for a time of deep reflection, gratitude, and generosity. The month is also an opportunity for strengthening community bonds and engaging in acts of charity.
