Arsenal’s ambitions for silverware this season have been significantly impacted by injuries to key players, including Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli. As Mikel Arteta’s squad gears up for a crucial Champions League fixture against PSV Eindhoven, the absence of these influential forwards presents a considerable challenge. With the Premier League title slipping further from reach, European success remains a primary objective for the Gunners.
A cornerstone of Arsenal’s attacking force, Saka has been recovering from a hamstring injury that necessitated surgery in December. His dynamic playmaking ability and goal-scoring prowess have been greatly missed on the field.
Recently, fans were encouraged by images of Saka training in the gym during Arsenal’s warm-weather camp in Dubai. However, Arteta has emphasized a cautious approach to his return, stating that the club will not rush his recovery process.
“We have to be careful and make sure he is fully fit before he returns,” Arteta previously remarked. Consequently, Saka has been ruled out for both legs of Arsenal’s Champions League Round of 16 tie against PSV Eindhoven, with his return expected post-March international break.
Projected return date: April 2025
Martinelli, another pivotal figure in Arsenal’s attack, suffered a hamstring injury during last month’s Carabao Cup semi-final defeat to Newcastle. Known for his pace and direct style of play, his absence further complicates Arteta’s tactical setup.
While Martinelli is anticipated to make his comeback earlier than Saka, Arteta remains cautious about setting a firm return date.
“They’re evolving well, but they’re still a bit far,” Arteta noted. “We have a meeting tomorrow to discuss where they are, especially Gabi. He has probably a chance before Bukayo to come in, but how soon that is, we’ll have to see how it goes in the next week or ten days.”
This suggests that while Martinelli might return slightly ahead of Saka, his availability for the upcoming Champions League clashes remains uncertain.
Projected return date: April 2025
During Arsenal’s Dubai training camp, Kai Havertz sustained a serious hamstring injury requiring surgery, ruling him out for the remainder of the season. The German midfielder expressed his disappointment but remains focused on his rehabilitation.
“The last few days have been tough to process both physically and mentally. But yesterday was a good day. A successful operation and a win,” Havertz shared on Instagram. “I’m now focused on my journey to full fitness and supporting the team in any way I can.”
Projected return date: Summer 2025
Gabriel Jesus is facing an extended period on the sidelines following knee surgery in January, with no definitive timeline for his return. His absence further depletes Arsenal’s attacking options.
Similarly, Takehiro Tomiyasu has been ruled out for the season after undergoing knee surgery. The Japan international has endured a frustrating campaign, featuring for only six minutes due to persistent fitness setbacks. Determined to make a comeback, he recently shared an update on social media.
“I had surgery on my knee a few days ago and have already started rehab to get back to doing what I love most. This has been the toughest period in my career, but I won’t give up,” Tomiyasu stated.
Projected return dates:
With several first-team players sidelined, Arteta faces the challenging task of keeping Arsenal’s season on track. The squad must navigate crucial Champions League fixtures and a demanding Premier League schedule without key contributors such as Saka, Martinelli, and Havertz.
As the season enters its decisive phase, Arsenal will be hoping for timely returns from their injured stars. The comebacks of Saka and Martinelli, in particular, could provide a crucial boost in the club’s pursuit of European and domestic success.
