Comedian and bestselling author Chelsea Handler recently opened up about her evolving relationship with body image during an appearance on The Jamie Kern Lima Show. Reflecting on her past struggles, Handler shared that she once weighed herself excessively—up to 15 times a day—and would even avoid social events based on the number on the scale. However, over the years, her perspective has shifted toward self-acceptance and strength.
Handler, who recently turned 50, discussed how her mindset has changed, emphasizing that while she still cares about her appearance, she no longer allows insecurities to dictate her life. “I used to obsess over my weight, running for hours just to see how much water weight I lost,” she admitted. “Looking back, I realize how much time I wasted worrying about my body image.”

During the conversation, Handler also addressed her well-known tradition of skiing in a bikini to celebrate her birthday—a practice she has occasionally modified at the request of her nieces and nephews. While acknowledging their concerns, she described the experience as liberating. “It’s freeing,” she said. “Me skiing down a mountain with a joint in one hand and a margarita in the other is exactly who I wanted to be when I grew up.”
The discussion also touched on broader societal pressures surrounding body image. Host Jamie Kern Lima cited statistics showing that 91% of women and girls opt out of meaningful activities due to self-consciousness. Handler acknowledged that she, too, was once deeply affected by these pressures but has since learned to focus on health and strength rather than unattainable perfection.
“At 50, I still care about how I look in a bathing suit,” Handler shared. “But I’ve come to accept that having cellulite is not shameful. My focus now is on being my strongest and healthiest self.” She emphasized her commitment to fitness, explaining that she lifts weights and trains consistently to maintain her strength and athletic ability, particularly for skiing.
Despite her progress, Handler acknowledged that societal beauty standards remain deeply ingrained. “I do care about the way I look, and I wish there were an easy answer to overcoming these pressures,” she admitted. “But what matters most is feeling strong, healthy, and empowered.”
