Schönebeck, Saxony-Anhalt – A police operation in Schönebeck turned fatal when special forces from the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) shot and killed a 26-year-old Afghan national. The man had reportedly threatened a German citizen of the same age and later confronted police officers with a knife.
The altercation occurred around 4:30 a.m. in an apartment building on Altfroser Strasse in the Frohse district, southeast of Magdeburg. According to reports, the Afghan suspect confronted his neighbor in the stairwell, leading to an escalating dispute. Witnesses who overheard the commotion alerted authorities.
Upon arrival, special forces from the LKA encountered the armed suspect. Despite multiple warnings, the man allegedly refused to comply and continued to threaten officers. In response, law enforcement fired shots, critically injuring him. He was transported to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
According to local newspaper Magdeburger Volksstimme, police initially fired three warning shots around 4:50 a.m., but the suspect did not respond. This account has yet to be officially confirmed by authorities in Magdeburg.

The firearm used in the incident has been confiscated and is undergoing forensic examination. A police spokesperson stated, “The public prosecutor’s office is conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the use of force.”
The suspect was carrying identification documents, which allowed authorities to quickly confirm his identity. However, the motive behind the dispute remains unclear, and investigations are ongoing.
