JamesKYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia launched heavy aerial attacks on Ukraine for the second consecutive night, killing at least 20 people, Ukrainian officials reported. The strikes came shortly after the United States ceased sharing satellite intelligence with Kyiv, a decision that significantly weakens Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
The decision to withhold military aid and satellite imagery follows a tense White House visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. U.S. President Donald Trump has been pressuring Ukraine to negotiate a peace agreement with Russia, a move that has sparked controversy among NATO allies.
The intelligence cutoff is expected to have a significant impact on Ukraine’s ability to detect and counter incoming Russian attacks, as well as conduct operations inside Russian territory. Without access to crucial surveillance data, Kyiv faces an increased threat from airstrikes and ground offensives.
The latest wave of Russian strikes targeted multiple regions, with the embattled eastern Donetsk region suffering the heaviest casualties. According to regional Governor Vadym Filashkin, at least 11 people were killed in attacks on a town late Friday. In addition, six more people lost their lives in four frontline towns where Russian forces have been steadily advancing.
The northeastern Kharkiv region also witnessed deadly strikes, with a Russian drone hitting a civilian workshop, killing three people. Emergency service officials have warned that the death toll may rise as rescue teams continue to search the rubble for survivors.
The attacks have drawn strong reactions from Ukraine’s allies. Polish President Donald Tusk condemned the assault, blaming the lack of firm international action against Russia. “This is what happens when someone appeases barbarians,” he wrote on X. “More bombs, more aggression, more victims. Another tragic night in Ukraine.”
In response to the devastation, Filashkin declared a day of mourning on Saturday, urging Ukrainians to honor the victims of the relentless Russian bombardment.
The escalation of attacks coincides with increasing political and military uncertainty for Ukraine. As Russian forces push forward on multiple fronts, Kyiv now faces the added challenge of losing critical U.S. intelligence support. While European allies continue to back Ukraine, the shifting stance of the United States could alter the course of the war significantly.
As the conflict continues, Ukraine’s leadership must navigate a precarious situation, balancing military resistance with diplomatic negotiations—all while facing relentless Russian aggression.
