Berlin (dpa) – The Social Democratic Party (SPD) leadership has officially endorsed the commencement of coalition negotiations with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU), paving the way for the formation of a black-red government. The SPD executive board unanimously approved the recommendation put forward by party co-chairs Lars Klingbeil and Saskia Esken during a conference call, less than a day after exploratory talks concluded with the Union. The final step before negotiations begin is the expected approval from the CDU leadership, which is set to decide on Monday. Formal negotiations are scheduled to commence on Thursday.

“For the SPD, it is clear: we stand by our responsibility. We act for Germany and negotiate for the people in our country,” the SPD executive board stated. “That is the role of social democracy. In the end, SPD members will vote on the coalition agreement in a binding online member vote.”

The decision follows extensive exploratory talks between the Union and the SPD, during which key contentious issues were addressed. These discussions resulted in an eleven-page exploratory paper that outlines agreements on major financial policies, migration regulations, and a reform of the citizen’s allowance. The document was presented on Saturday by negotiators from both parties, who jointly recommended initiating formal coalition negotiations.

Political Implications and Outlook

The unanimous approval by the SPD’s executive board signals a commitment to forming a stable governing coalition amid ongoing political challenges in Germany. The upcoming negotiations will likely shape the country’s economic and social policies for the coming years, with particular emphasis on fiscal management, immigration reforms, and social welfare adjustments.

The coalition talks reflect a pragmatic approach by both the SPD and the CDU/CSU to ensure political stability and policy continuity. However, internal party debates and the upcoming SPD member vote on the final coalition agreement introduce an element of uncertainty. The success of these negotiations will depend on both parties’ ability to find common ground on key legislative priorities while maintaining support from their respective political bases.

As Germany navigates a complex political and economic landscape, the formation of a black-red coalition will play a crucial role in shaping governance and addressing pressing national and international challenges.
