Political and Social Backlash Overshadows Upcoming Release ,The highly anticipated live-action remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs has become one of the most divisive films of 2025, facing intense scrutiny well before its theatrical release. Originally expected to be a surefire success, the Disney adaptation has instead become a flashpoint for social and political debates, fueled by casting choices, perceived “wokeness,” and real-world geopolitical conflicts.

Casting Controversies and Political Divisions

Since its inception, the Snow White remake has faced backlash over the casting of Rachel Zegler, a Latina actress, in the role of the iconic princess. While some celebrated the diverse representation, others criticized the decision, with some detractors even engaging in racist trolling—similar to what Halle Bailey experienced when cast as Ariel in The Little Mermaid (2023).

Beyond casting, political tensions have added fuel to the fire. Zegler’s pro-Palestinian remarks, particularly her “free Palestine” post in 2024, have sparked criticism, while Gal Gadot, who plays the Evil Queen, has faced backlash for her vocal support of Israel. The war in Gaza has unexpectedly seeped into discussions about the film, with some calling for a boycott based on the actresses’ opposing stances.

Further controversy erupted after the 2024 U.S. presidential election when Zegler expressed her disappointment on social media, stating that she hoped “Trump voters and Trump himself never know peace.” This led to a fiery response from conservative commentators, including former Fox News host Megyn Kelly, who called Zegler a “pig.” Though Zegler later apologized for her remarks, the damage had already been done.

The Dwarfs Debate: Representation or Erasure?

The film’s approach to the seven dwarfs has also been contentious. Actor Peter Dinklage, one of Hollywood’s most prominent figures with dwarfism, criticized the original film’s portrayal of the characters, calling it “a backward story of seven dwarfs living in a cave together.” In response, Disney announced a reimagining of the characters, referring to them as “magical creatures.” However, the final trailer revealed CGI characters that still strongly resemble the classic dwarfs, reigniting debates over whether the change was necessary.

Many actors with dwarfism, including those in the entertainment industry, have voiced their frustration, arguing that the new approach has deprived them of job opportunities. A performer told the Daily Mail, “Disney is trying too hard to be politically correct, but in doing so, it’s damaging our careers.”

Marketing Struggles and Box Office Uncertainty

Given the intense scrutiny, Disney has taken a cautious approach to marketing Snow White. The film’s European premiere was held in Spain, rather than the usual Hollywood red carpet spectacle, and the Los Angeles premiere is scheduled for an unusual afternoon timeslot. Notably, red-carpet reporters—who typically avoid controversial questions—have not been invited.

Adding to Disney’s woes, early reactions to the trailer have been lukewarm, with critics slamming the film’s CGI and visual effects. The Guardian even described the trailer as “the ugliest thing ever committed to screen.” While the film features new songs by La La Land songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the first released track, Waiting on a Wish, was dismissed as generic and uninspired.

Box-office projections estimate an opening weekend of around $50 million—a modest figure for a film with a reported $200 million budget. While Disney has had recent box-office successes with Moana 2 and Mufasa: The Lion King, Snow White’s controversies may hinder its financial performance.

A Victim of the Times?

Despite its fairy-tale origins, Snow White has become an unexpected battleground for modern political and social issues. Whether the film will overcome the controversy and achieve box-office success remains to be seen. For now, the remake stands as a stark example of how entertainment and real-world conflicts have become increasingly intertwined.

Disney’s Snow White premieres worldwide on March 21, 2025.
