Berlin (dpa) – The Green Party is set to determine its candidate for the Vice President of the Bundestag in a secret ballot on Monday. According to parliamentary group leader Britta Haßelmann, the election process will proceed smoothly, with members voting at their parliamentary group meeting if multiple candidates step forward.
Key Contenders for the Role
Katrin Göring-Eckardt, who previously held the position, has expressed her desire to continue serving as Vice President. The 58-year-old highlighted her East German background as a key aspect of her candidacy. Additionally, former Green Party co-leader Omid Nouripour (49) declared his interest early on, advocating for diversity, the preservation of parliamentary traditions, and a transparent, citizen-focused approach to politics.
Adding to the competition, seasoned Green Party politician Claudia Roth (69) recently announced her intention to run for the position, surprising some party members. Roth previously served as Bundestag Vice President from 2013 to 2021 before joining the “traffic light” coalition government as Minister of State for Culture.
Potential Runoff Election
Should multiple candidates remain in the race by Monday, the Green Party may require two rounds of voting to finalize its nominee. The outcome of this internal election will shape the party’s representation in Bundestag leadership and influence parliamentary proceedings moving forward.
