Jannik Sinner hits the pitch in Hamburg (ADRIAN DENNIS

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner (23) is poised to make his debut at the prestigious ATP tournament at Hamburg’s Rothenbaum this summer. The Italian, who is currently serving a suspension, confirmed his participation in the Hamburg Open, scheduled from May 17 to 24. This clay-court event will serve as crucial preparation for the French Open in Paris, which begins the following week.

The Australian Open champion will return to competition for the second time after a three-month doping ban. Prior to Hamburg, he is expected to resume his tour at the ATP Masters in Rome, beginning May 7. “The fans always create a fantastic atmosphere at the beautiful Center Court. I am excited to finally experience Hamburg and compete at Rothenbaum for the first time,” Sinner expressed in a statement.

Other top players who have already confirmed their participation in the Hamburg Open include Stefanos Tsitsipas, Holger Rune, Andrey Rublev, Gaël Monfils, and Jan-Lennard Struff.

Sinner, a native of South Tyrol, tested positive for clostebol twice in March 2024. However, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) accepted his explanation that the steroid had inadvertently entered his system during treatment by his physiotherapist. While the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) initially sought to have the case reviewed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), an agreement was reached. Sinner’s suspension will officially end on May 4.
