Rome (dpa) – Pope Francis has been released from the Gemelli University Hospital in Rome after spending over five weeks receiving treatment. The 88-year-old pontiff returned to the Vatican in a motorcade, traveling in a small car. Before his departure, he made a brief public appearance on the hospital’s balcony, where he addressed supporters in a weak voice from his wheelchair. He expressed gratitude for the prayers and well-wishes he received from around the world, as thousands of people gathered below to cheer for him.
Medical professionals have confirmed that the Pope has recovered from a severe case of pneumonia. However, he will continue receiving medical care at his residence, Casa Santa Marta, in the Vatican. Although doctors are pleased with his progress, Francis appeared frail during his short public appearance, which lasted less than a minute.
Doctors Advise Rest and Limited Public Interaction
Physicians have recommended that Francis take at least two more months to rest, advising him to avoid large crowds due to his ongoing respiratory challenges. His participation in the upcoming Easter celebrations remains uncertain. At 88, Francis is the second-oldest Pope in history and has led the Catholic Church since March 2013, following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI.
During his return journey from the hospital, the Pope made a stop at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, his favorite church in Rome. The Argentinian-born leader has previously expressed his desire to be buried there.
Health Struggles Began Before Christmas
Francis had been battling bronchitis since before Christmas. Despite ongoing treatment, his condition worsened, leading to his hospitalization on February 14. Reports indicate that during his 38-day stay, he faced two critical health crises that put his life at risk.
The Pope was diagnosed with severe pneumonia, which affected both lungs and was complicated by multiple infections. Additionally, his kidney function temporarily declined, and he experienced severe shortness of breath on several occasions. While he required mechanical ventilation using a mask, doctors clarified that he was never intubated.
Even after returning to the Vatican, Francis will continue receiving oxygen therapy through a nasal tube and will undergo breathing and physical therapy.
Limited Public Appearances Since Hospitalization
During his hospital stay, the Vatican released only one photograph of Pope Francis—showing him from behind while praying in the chapel on the hospital’s tenth floor. The Pope also issued an audio message, though reports indicate that it was difficult to understand.
Upcoming Engagements and Future Plans
News of the Pope’s imminent discharge from the hospital surprised many, as his condition had been a major concern. Doctors noted that his health has been improving rapidly, and if his recovery continues at this pace, his rest period could end earlier than expected.
A meeting with King Charles III is scheduled for early April, and a trip to Turkey is tentatively planned for May, though no official announcement has been made. It remains uncertain whether Francis will be able to deliver the traditional Urbi et Orbi blessing on Easter Sunday. The Easter season is typically packed with events for the Pope, and this year, Rome is seeing a surge in pilgrims due to the 2025 Holy Year in the Catholic Church.
