EU Representatives Agree on New Driving License Rules

Published

on

The European Union is moving toward harmonizing its driving license regulations across member states. After lengthy negotiations, representatives of the European Parliament and the EU member states governments reached a compromise. The new rules aim to improve road safety and include several key provisions:

  • Medical examinations or self-assessment screenings will be required when issuing driving licenses in all member states. This will help ensure drivers are medically fit to drive.
  • A uniform mobile driving license will be available to all EU citizens by 2030, allowing it to be recognized across all member states. This digital license will make it easier for people to travel and drive within the EU.

However, one controversial proposal was not implemented: the suggestion that driving licenses for people over 70 should be renewed every five years. This idea was part of the original proposal but was not agreed upon during the negotiations.

The next steps will see the European Council and European Parliament plenary formally adopt these changes.
