Delta Air Lines is offering each passenger on board the flight that crash-landed in Toronto $30,000 in compensation, following a dramatic emergency landing that saw the aircraft skid, catch fire, and flip upside down. Miraculously, all 76 passengers and four crew members survived, with only minor injuries reported.
The incident occurred as the flight from Minneapolis was attempting to land in Toronto on Monday. Witnesses described a terrifying scene as the plane scraped along the runway before coming to a halt. Some passengers were left hanging upside down in their seats as they scrambled to escape the wreckage.
Delta stated that the compensation payment is an “advance” meant to assist passengers with immediate financial concerns and does not impact their rights to further claims. A Toronto law firm, Rochon Genova, has already been retained by some passengers and their families, seeking a “timely and fair resolution” for injuries sustained.
Investigators are still determining the cause of the crash, with experts speculating that harsh winter weather and a rapid descent may have played a role. The plane’s cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder have been recovered, and Canada’s Transportation Safety Board, supported by U.S. officials, is leading the investigation.
Despite the severity of the crash, aviation experts and officials continue to emphasize that air travel remains one of the safest modes of transportation. Deltaâs CEO, Ed Bastian, praised the flight crew for their swift actions, stating that “safety is embedded into our system.”
