CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Music star Katy Perry and TV personality Gayle King are preparing to embark on a journey to space alongside Lauren Sanchez, Jeff Bezos’ fiancée, and three other women. The historic flight, organized by Bezos’ space company, Blue Origin, was announced on Thursday.
Sanchez, who is a helicopter pilot and former TV journalist, personally selected the crew for this exciting mission. The all-female group will join her for a 10-minute suborbital spaceflight scheduled to take off from West Texas sometime this spring, though an exact launch date has not yet been revealed. The flight will be powered by Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket.
Since 2021, Blue Origin has been sending tourists on brief trips into space, offering passengers a unique experience of weightlessness. Some passengers have received complimentary rides, while others have paid significant sums for the opportunity. It remains unclear who will be covering the costs for this upcoming flight.
In addition to Perry and King, Sanchez has invited a notable group of women to join the mission, including Aisha Bowe, a former NASA rocket scientist who now leads an engineering firm, research scientist Amanda Nguyen, and movie producer Kerianne Flynn.
This upcoming mission will mark Blue Origin’s 11th human spaceflight. Notably, Jeff Bezos and his brother were aboard the company’s inaugural flight.
